Ce livre électronique fonctionne à la fois en mode sériel (ou linéaire) et parallèle (plusieurs zones ouvertes en même temps). La zone principale est occupée par le texte lui-même (et les deux préfaces et l'avant-propos liminaires, ainsi que la bibliographie considérée comme composante textuelle). La table des matières constitue un hypertexte, qui appelle différentes composantes du texte. À son tour, le texte appelle des notes, références bibliographiques et figures, qui forment un hypotexte. D'autres documents, qui peuvent être appelés par le lecteur à tout moment et qui sont destinés à éclairer ou à enrichir le texte pendant la lecture -- la liste d'abréviations, le glossaire et notamment le formulaire de requête de la base en ligne du 'Thresor de la langue françoyse' installée au centre ARTFL à l'University of Chicago --, forment un paratexte. Il y a enfin une dernière zone occupée par l'intertexte, dans lequel peuvent être affichés, à partir de liens dans la bibliographie, différentes études en ligne qui peuvent compléter la lecture de ce livre. This electronic book functions in both serial (or linear) mode and parallel mode (several documents open at the same time). The main zone is occupied by the text itself (and the introductory prefaces and foreword, as well as the bibliography considered as a textual component). The table of contents constitutes a hypertext, which calls different components of the text. In its turn the text calls notes, bibliographical references and figures, which together form a hypotext. Other documents, which may be called by the reader at any time and which are intended to clarify or enrich the text during reading -- the list of abbreviations, glossary and particularly the query form of the online database of the 'Thresor de la langue françoyse' installed at the ARTFL Project, University of Chicago --, form a paratext. A final zone is occupied by the intertext, in which can be displayed, from links within the bibliography, other online studies that can complement the reading of this book.

Le livre se lit idéalement à l'aide de cadres ("frames") et de Javascript, mais peut se lire sans l'un ni l'autre. La fonction cadres permet d'afficher sur un même écran le texte dans le cadre principal, pendant que le petit cadre inférieur affiche des éléments hypotextuels (notes, références, figures, etc.); sinon, on est obligé de passer d'une fenêtre ("window") à l'autre. Les dimensions relatives des deux cadres peuvent être modifiées verticalement à l'aide du curseur placé sur la règle-frontière horizontale et déplacé vers le haut ou le bas (attention à ne pas fermer un cadre complètement, au risque d'en faire disparaître le contenu par la suite!). Javascript (qui est activé et désactivé dans le menu "Options -> Préférences de réseau -> Langues" de Netscape) offre deux avantages: a) il affiche plusieurs des documents -- la table des matières, la présente notice, le Thresor en ligne, la liste d'abréviations, le glossaire -- dans une fenêtre simple débarrassée des différentes barres qui remplissent inutilement l'espace (barre de boutons, barre de progression, etc. -- seules y sont présentes la barre de déroulement vertical et la barre de titre) [*]; b) il fait apparaître au premier plan de l'écran toute fenêtre ouverte que l'on appelle en cliquant sur un lien (table, glossaire, Thresor en ligne, mais non les notes et références en mode 'sans cadres' -- il faut aller chercher la fenêtre de celles-ci soi-même). The book is ideally read with the help of frames and Javascript, but can be read without either. Frames allow both text and hypotext (notes, references, figures) to be displayed in the same window, the former in a large frame, the latter in a smaller frame at the bottom of the screen; otherwise one has to go from one window to another. The relative size of each frame can be modified by placing the cursor on the horizontal border separating the two and moving it up or down (warning: closing up a frame completely may cause the contents of it to disappear entirely!). Javascript (which can be activated or disactivated in Netscape's "Options -> Network preferences -> Language" menu) offers two useful features: a) it displays several of the documents -- the table of contents, the present explanatory note, the online Thresor, list of abbreviations, glossary -- in a simple window uncluttered by the various bars that use up space unnecessarily (tool, location, directories, status, menu -- only the title bar and the vertical scrolling bar are left) [*]; b) it puts in the foreground of the screen any open window called by clicking on a link (table, glossary, online Thresor, but not notes and references in 'no frames' mode -- one has to click on the window of these to make it pop up).

Les dimensions de chaque fenêtre peuvent être modifiées à l'aide des boutons tout en haut et à droite et, dans le cas d'une fenêtre non définie par Javascript, du curseur placé sur un des bords de la fenêtre. Il est vivement recommandé de travailler en mode 'écran partiel' afin de disposer et de voir à tout moment sur l'écran les différentes fenêtres ouvertes. Par exemple: Each window can be resized by means of the buttons at the top right of the window and, in the case of windows not defined by Javascript, by means of the cursor placed on one its edges. The reader is strongly advised to work in 'partial screen' mode so that the different opened windows can be placed and seen on the screen at all times. For example:
