During my analyses of Nicot's Thresor I had said to myself that I would computerize the dictionary one day to bring to light many of the items that were hidden within it. That day came at the end of the 1970s when I had the resources necessary for the job. My first goal was to create, by electronic means, a concordance of the text. Among other things a concordance lists all occurrences of each word giving contexts for each occurrence, as in the sample given here. Nicot was at one time the King's archivist, and one can see from the contexts of the words archifs and chartre that the room where the archives were kept was called the thresor. There are autobiographical references in the text: see, for example, the entry for nicotiane where Nicot talks about sending the tobacco plant back to France during his embassy to Portugal; under the entry for the town of Nīmes, Nicot states that he, the author of the Thresor, was born there.
