I shall give a couple of examples of the influence of English on French in the realm of the Internet. For email the French have simply borrowed various forms of the English which they pronounce more or less like the English. I found examples of the six different spellings shown on the screen on one page published on a University of Grenoble server. French-speaking Canadians are smarter: they have imitated the English shortening of electronic mail to email, by shortening courrier électronique to the elegant courriel. The relative frequencies produced by Google for sites marked as Canadian or French show that the French-language-conformant form courriel is the most frequent in Canada, whereas the English forms are more frequent in France. Or at least that was the situation in April 2003.
